Tokyo rises to 3rd place in global city index

A Japanese private think tank has ranked Tokyo in 3rd place in its evaluation of the world's major cities. Tokyo overtook Paris to make it into the top 3 for the first time.

The Institute for Urban Strategies released its annual Global Power City Index on Tuesday.

The index evaluates major cities in 6 categories, including economy, cultural interaction and accessibility, to determine their overall power to attract individuals and businesses.

Tokyo had been ranked 4th for 8 straight years since the institute began releasing the index in 2008.

London retains its top position, with New York in 2nd place.

The institute says Tokyo's score was boosted by an increase in the number of foreign visitors and more direct flights connecting the city with overseas destinations.
