Tokyo International Film Festival opens

posted on October 23, 2015

The annual Tokyo International Film Festival has begun with a star-studded opening. The festival is one of Asia's biggest film events.

Movie fans cheered as actors and directors from Japan and abroad walked the red carpet leading to an event venue in the downtown Roppongi district on Thursday.

Sixteen films out of more than 1,400 entries have been shortlisted in the festival's Grand Prix competition.

They include 3 Japanese-directed works -- Kohei Oguri's "FOUJITA," Koji Fukada's "Sayonara," and Yoshihiro Nakamura's "The Inerasable."

This year's festival also features commemorative screenings of films starring late Japanese actor Ken Takakura, who died last November.
