IOC: Study Tokyo's proposed sports as a package

posted on October 15, 2015

A senior member of the International Olympic Committee said he wants additional events proposed by Tokyo's organizing committee for the 2020 Games considered as a complete package.

IOC Coordination Commission Chair John Coates made the remark at a meeting in Tokyo on Wednesday with the city's organizing committee.

Tokyo organizers have put forward 18 events in 5 sports for addition to the 2020 Games. The sports are baseball-softball, karate, sports climbing, surfing, and skateboarding.

Coates said the IOC's program commission will finish studying the proposal by next March, and the executive board by June.

The IOC will announce its decision at a general assembly in August before the opening of the Rio Games.

Coates said he believes the proposal is a well-balanced package of indoor and outdoor sports. He noted that it includes traditional events as well as those popular with young people.

He said it was important to consider the proposed sports as a whole.
