The number of visitors to Japan hit a record high in September due to brisk tourism from China and South Korea.

Japan National Tourism Organization issued a report on Wednesday that estimated the number of foreign travelers to Japan in September was about 1,918,000.

The number was up 19 percent from the figure for the same month of last year.

Visitors from China numbered 522,000, up 6.3 percent, and those from South Korea rose by 42.8 percent to 430,000. More than 347,000 people came to Japan from Taiwan.

The organization says an increasing number of people from China are visiting Japan on cruise ships.
