Final New Year auction at Tsukiji fish market

posted on January 5, 2016

Tokyo's legendary Tsukiji market, one of the world's biggest wholesale markets for fish and seafood, held its first auction of 2016 before dawn on Tuesday morning.

It was also the final New Year auction at the market's current location in central Tokyo.

The market is ending its 81-year history in the Tsukiji district due to aging facilities. It will be relocated to a new complex in another seaside area of Tokyo Bay in November.

This year, a 200-kilogram bluefin from northern Japan fetched the top price of about 120 thousand dollars. That's the 5th-highest auction price in the past decade.
