Mazda resurrects rotary engine for sport concept

Mazda Motor will exhibit a rotary-engine concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show, fueling hopes for a revival of its signature technology.

Mazda has no plans for a market release of the sports car at this point. It will gauge the response during the event, which opens at the end of next week.

A rotary engine uses a triangular rotor to handle intake, compression, combustion and exhaust. It can achieve higher output compared with a conventional piston engine and offers a smoother drive, but fuel economy is weak.

Mazda is the only automaker that succeeded in mass-producing rotary-engine cars, overcoming durability problems and other challenges.
