Kuma to design new Yamanote Line station

posted on September 8, 2016

East Japan Railway Co., or JR East, said Tuesday that a planned new station on its Yamanote Line in central Tokyo will be designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, who designed the new National Stadium.

The new station, to be built between Tamachi and Shinagawa stations, will tentatively open in spring 2020, shortly before the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo in the same year, and fully go into service around 2024, the company said.

The Kuma-designed new National Stadium will be used as the main venue for the quadrennial sporting events.

The new station will be constructed at a rail yard located about 900 meters from Shinagawa Station and 1.3 kilometers from Tamachi Station.
