Kochikame manga series to end its 40-year run

Japanese manga artist Osamu Akimoto will end his "Kochira Katsushika-ku Kamearikoen-mae Hashutsujo" police comedy series, widely known as "Kochikame," that has been published in a weekly magazine for 40 years, it was learned Saturday.

The Sept. 17 edition of the Shonen Jump comic magazine of Shueisha Inc. will be the last issue to contain the popular manga. The book series will be concluded with the 200th volume including the final episode, which will hit the store shelves the same day.

Starting in 1976, the Kochikame slapstick manga series features Kankichi Ryotsu, a patrol officer at the Kamearikoen-mae police box in Tokyo's downtown area.

Its episode has appeared in the magazine without any skip for the 40 years. The book series has had some 150 million copies in print.
