posted on September 7, 2016

Targeting wealthy retirees and visitors from abroad, Japan Railways Group companies are gearing up for the launch of new luxury sleeper train services next spring.

Train Suite Shiki-Shima, currently on order for East Japan Railway Co. <9020>, or JR East, is set to debut in May next year.

Carrying up to 34 passengers, the 10-car train will feature suites for all guest rooms on round trips to the Tohoku northeastern region and Hokkaido, northernmost Japan, before returning to Ueno Station in central Tokyo.

The most expensive fare for Shiki-Shima will be set at 480,000 yen per person for an overnight trip and around 1,120,000 yen for a three-night trip.
