Japan Sports Agency Inaugurated

posted on October 1, 2015

Japanese government officials are speeding up preparations for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympics. They've launched a special agency to oversee the promotion of sports-related policies. The Japan Sports Agency is an external bureau of the education ministry.

The agency is headed by Olympic swimming champion Daichi Suzuki, who took the gold in the 100-meter backstroke at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. "I am determined to contribute to society through the promotion of sports activities," Suzuki said. "I hope that people a few years from now will recognize the benefits of such an agency."

The agency will allocate funds to train Japanese athletes for the 2020 Games. It will also encourage more people to take up sports, with the aim of enhancing public health.
