A senior member of the International Olympic Committee has welcomed the sports that Tokyo's organizing committee has suggested be added to the 2020 Games.

IOC Coordination Commission Chair John Coates referred to the proposed 18 additional events in 5 sports in a meeting in Tokyo on Tuesday with the city's organizing committee. The sports are baseball and softball, karate, sport climbing, surfing, and roller sports.

Coates said they are popular among young people, and will help gather attention to Olympic reform. He said he is very happy that the proposals are being welcomed globally and in Japan.
