Local communities gearing up for March 26 Hokkaido shinkansen launch

posted on December 30, 2015

Communities in the Donan southern region of Hokkaido are making last-minute preparations in a festive mood ahead of the launch of the Hokkaido Shinkansen Line on March 26, the first bullet train service in the northernmost Japan prefecture.

Hokkaido Railway Co., better known as JR Hokkaido, has already announced train operation timetables for the Shinkansen line, which connects Shin-Aomori Station in Aomori Prefecture, just south of Hokkaido and located in the northernmost part of Honshu, the biggest of Japan's four main islands, and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station in Hokkaido, one of the four main islands.

The new bullet train line will be connected with East Japan Railway Co.'s <9020> Tohoku Shinkansen Line linking Tokyo Station and Shin-Aomori, enabling passengers to make Shinkansen trips between Tokyo and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto seamlessly without changing trains.

In front of Kikonai Station, a Hokkaido Shinkansen station in the town of Kikonai, a "michi no eki" rest area facility is set to open on Jan. 13.
