posted on October 15, 2015

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko have welcomed visiting Papua New Guinean Prime Minister Peter O'Neill and his wife at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

Papua New Guinea was the site of fierce fighting in World War Two.

Officials said the Emperor expressed his deep concern for the many lives lost in Papua New Guinea during the war.

O'Neill said his country is building a war memorial that also recognizes the many Japanese soldiers who died there.

He said he wants to support Japanese who visit his country to search for the remains of Japanese soldiers and to remember those who died in the war.
