Continued eruptions confirmed on new island

Japan Coast Guard officials say they have confirmed continued explosive eruptions with flowing lava on a recently expanded island.

Nishinoshima Island in the Ogasawara chain, about 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo, began expanding after an undersea eruption started near it in November 2013.

The coast guard conducted an aerial survey on Tuesday.

Officials say they observed a crater in the island's center spewing smoke and volcanic rocks into the air once every 3 to 5 minutes.

They say there were no explosive eruptions in an observation last month.
