Hundreds of visitors have celebrated the 19th birthday of a male gorilla popular for his good looks at a zoo in Nagoya City, central Japan.

Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens held a birthday event for Shabani, a western lowland gorilla, on Tuesday.

Shabani's handlers gave him a cake decorated with his favorite vegetables such as pumpkins, tomatoes, and bell peppers.

About 500 visitors cheered when Shabani emerged from his cage and took a big bite out of the cake. Some said "he is cool," and others shouted "happy birthday."

In human years, Shabani is in his late 30s. He is the father of 2, and, unlike most other male gorillas, reportedly takes good care of his children.
