Another Japanese nuclear reactor back online

posted on October 16, 2015

Kyushu Electric Power Co. reactivated the No. 2 reactor at its Sendai nuclear power plant in southwestern Japan on Thursday.

The reactor, which became the second one to come online under the country's stricter safety standards introduced after the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident, reached criticality, a self-sustained nuclear fission chain reaction, at 11 p.m. (2 p.m. GMT).

At 10:30 a.m., the company started work to remove control rods, which are used to contain nuclear fission, at the reactor in the plant in the coastal city of Satsumasendai, Kagoshima Prefecture.

The No. 2 reactor's operation was resumed for the first time in four years and one month since it went offline for routine inspections in September 2011.
