Omotenashi hospitality to be govt certified

posted on March 13, 2016

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry decided Friday to create in July a certification system for "omotenashi" hospitality at services companies such as hotels and restaurants.

The ministry aims to upgrade the country's services industries by setting objective evaluation criteria under the certification system as the number of foreign visitors to Japan is expected to grow further toward the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The system will have three omotenashi grades - basic, middle and top, according to ministry officials.

Hotels, restaurants and others which offer a certain level of hospitality, such as providing explanations in foreign languages and allowing credit card payments, will be certified to be at the basic grade.
