Mount Fuji climbing season opens

posted on July 3, 2016

The climbing season for Mount Fuji opened Friday on the Yamanashi Prefecture side. The mountain is Japan's highest, and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

It straddles Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures. The Shizuoka side will open to climbers on July 10th.

People who managed to climb to the 6th station of the mountain on opening day were able to view the sun rise among a sea of clouds shortly after 4:30 AM.

About 100 people attended an annual ceremony held at a Shinto shrine at the mountain's 5th station. The shrine is said to date back to the 10th Century.

The chief priest celebrated the opening of the climbing season and prayed for the safety of the climbers.
