Major western part of Shin-Tomei Expressway opens

posted on February 14, 2016

A major western section of the Shin-Tomei Expressway opened Saturday with completion of a 55-kilomter portion in central Japan.

Now the new expressway, which runs in parallel with the Tomei Expressway connecting the Tokyo and Nagoya metropolitan areas, stretches some 200 kilometers westward from the Gotenba junction in Shizuoka Prefecture, including the newly completed section between the junctions of Hamamatsu Inasa in the same prefecture and Toyota-higashi in Aichi Prefecture.

The opening of the western section of Shin Tomei is expected to reduce traffic jams by about 80 pct from some 600 times a year on Tomei's section between the Mikkabi and Toyota junctions in Shizuoka and Aichi, respectively.

In addition, the driving time between Tomei's Gotenba and Toyota junctions is seen to be cut by one hour from the current three hours.
