Kansai to woo foreign tourists with smart train card

posted on January 23, 2016

A smart train pass only available for foreign tourists will allow short-stay visitors in the Kansai region to use services by various operators, and entitle them to special deals at tourist attractions and shopping facilities.

The Kansai Economic Federation announced the introduction of the "Kansai One Pass" electronic pass on Jan. 20 based on the West Japan Railway Co. (JR West) Icoca smart card.

Users are eligible for discounts and gifts by showing the pass at 90 or so locations scattered throughout Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Nara and Wakayama prefectures.

A railway network map and various information on ways to use the pass will be available in Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean on a special website.
