4 expressways linked by Tokyo ring route

posted on November 1, 2015

An expressway that circles the Tokyo metropolitan area was extended Saturday to link four major expressways reaching the capital from western, central and northeastern Japan.

The Ken-O Expressway, which runs a ring route 40 to 60 kilometers from central Tokyo, connected the four expressways - the Tomei Expressway, the Chuo Expressway, the Kanetsu Expressway and the Tohoku Expressway.

The connection allows trucks to bypass central Tokyo to transport goods between the Kansai western region, the Chubu central region and the Tohoku northeastern region, helping ease city center traffic congestion.

On Saturday, the section between the Okegawa-Kitamoto and Shiraoka-Shobu interchanges, both in Saitama Prefecture, was opened to traffic.
